Chapter 24: Surat al-Baqarah and Ali ‘Imran
Al-Mundhiri records in his book al-Targhib wal-Tarhib:
Encouragement to recite Surat al-Baqarah and Ali ‘Imran, and what has been related about reciting the end of Ali ‘Imran and reflecting upon it.

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
Do not turn your houses into graveyards. Verily, Satan flees from the house in which Surat al-Baqarah is recited.

Ibn Abbas reported: While the Angel Gabriel was sitting with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, he heard a creaking noise above him. Gabriel raised his head and he said:
This is a door of heaven that has been opened today and it has never been opened before today.
Then an angel descended from it, and Gabriel said:
This angel descended to the earth today and he has never descended until today.
The angel greeted him with peace and he said:
Rejoice in two lights you have been given, which were not given to any prophet before you: the opening of the Book, Surat al-Fatihah, and the last verses of Surat al-Baqarah. You will never recite a letter from them but that you will be given.

Abu Umamah reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
Recite the Quran, for on the Day of Resurrection it will come as an intercessor for its reciters. Recite the two brightly illuminated chapters, Surat al-Baqarah and Ali Imran, for on the Day of Resurrection they will come as two clouds, or two shades, or two flocks of birds pleading for their companions. Recite Surat al-Baqarah as there is blessing in it, there is sorrow in leaving it, and the sorcerers cannot defeat it.

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
Everything has a summit and the summit of the Quran is Surat al-Baqarah. It contains a verse which is the head of the Quran, the verse of the Throne.

Sahl ibn Sa’d reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
Verily, everything has a summit and the summit of the Quran is Surat al-Baqarah. Whoever recites it in his house at night, Satan will not enter his house for three nights. Whoever recites it during the day, Satan will not enter his house for three days.

Abdullah ibn Mas’ud reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
Recite Surat al-Baqarah in your houses, for Satan does not enter a house in which Surat al-Baqarah is recited.

Usayd ibn Hudayr reported: He said, “O Messenger of Allah, while I was reciting Surat al-Baqarah in the night, I heard a loud noise behind me and I thought my horse had escaped.” The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
Recite, O Abu ‘Atik.
Then, I turned to behold the likeness of a lamp hanging between the heavens and the earth, as the Prophet was saying:
Recite, O Abu ‘Atik.
He said, “O Messenger of Allah, how can I keep going?” The Prophet said:
These angels descended for your recitation of Surat al-Baqarah. If you had continued, you would have seen wonders.

Al-Nawwas ibn Sam’an reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
On the Day of Resurrection, the Quran and its people who acted upon it will be brought forth, preceded by Surat al-Baqarah and Ali ‘Imran.
Al-Nawwas said, “The Prophet presented three parables for them both that I will never forget.” The Prophet said:
It is as if they are two clouds, or two canopies of dark shade with light between them, or two flocks of birds in ranks, advocating for their reciters.

Buraydah reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
Learn Surat al-Baqarah, for adhering to it is blessed, leaving it is sorrow, and the sorcerers cannot defeat it. Learn al-Baqarah and Ali ‘Imran, for they are both the brightly illuminated chapters coming on the Day of Resurrection as if they were two clouds, or two canopies of shade, or as If they are a decisive wall of birds in ranks, arguing on behalf of their reciters.

Al-Nu’man ibn Bashir reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
Verily, Allah issued a decree before He created the heavens and the earth by a thousand years. He sent down two verse for the end of Surat al-Baqarah. They are not recited in a house but that Satan will not come near it.

Aisha reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon, said to me on one of my nights:
O Aisha, leave me to worship my Lord tonight.
I said, “By Allah, I love to be close to you and I love what pleases you.” The Prophet stood up and performed ablution, then stood in prayer. He did not stop weeping until it was moist around his eyes. Then, he wept and he did not stop weeping until his beard was moist. Then, he wept and he did not stop weeping until the ground was moist. Bilal came and announced the call to prayer. When he saw the Prophet weeping, he said, “O Messenger of Allah, why are you weeping when Allah has forgiven you for what you have done and what you will do?” The Prophet said:
Shall I not be a grateful servant? A verse has been revealed to me tonight and woe to one who reads it without reflecting upon it: Verily, in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of the night and day, are signs for those of understanding. (3:190)
