Chapter 54: Purifying the heart from envy
Al-Mundhiri recorded the following chapter in his book Al-Targhib wal-Tarhib:
Discouragement of envy, and the virtue of a pure heart.

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
Beware of suspicion, for suspicion is the most false of tales. Do not seek out faults, do not spy on each other, do not contend with each other, do not envy each other, do not hate each other, and do not turn away from each other. Rather, be servants of Allah as brothers.

In another narration, the Prophet said:
Do not envy each other, do not outbid each other, do not hate each other, do not turn away from each other, and do not outsell each other. Rather, be servants of Allah as brothers. The Muslim is the brother of another Muslim. He does not wrong him, nor humiliate him, nor look down upon him. Righteousness is here.
The Prophet pointed to his chest three times, and he said:
It is enough evil for a man to look down upon his Muslim brother. The entirety of the Muslim is sacred to another Muslim: his life, his wealth, and his honor.

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
Faith and envy do not combine within a believing servant.

In another narration, the Prophet said:
Greed and faith are never combined in the heart of a servant.

The people will remain upon goodness as long as they do not envy each other.

Al-Zubayr ibn al-‘Awwam reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
Lurking towards you are the diseases of the nations before you. Envy and hatred are the razor. I do not say it shaves hair, but rather it shaves the religion. By the one in whose hand is my soul, you will not enter Paradise until you have faith and you will not have faith until you love each other. Shall I tell you what can affirm that for you? Spread peace between yourselves.

Abdullah ibn Amr reported: I said, “O Messenger of Allah, who are the best people?” The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
One with a heart swept clean and truthful in speech.
We said, “O Messenger of Allah, we know truthful in speech. What is a heart swept clean?” The Prophet said:
One that is mindful of Allah and pure, in which there is no sin, nor aggression, nor envy.
We said, “Who shows a sign of it?” The Prophet said:
One who hates worldliness and loves the Hereafter.
They said, “And who shows a sign of it?” The Prophet said:
A believer with good character.
