Chapter 59: Removing harmful things from road

Al-Mundhiri recorded the following chapter in his book Al-Targhib wal-Tarhib:

Encouragement to remove harmful things from the road.

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Faith has sixty to seventy branches, the best of which is to declare there is no God but Allah, the least of which is to clear something harmful from the road, and modesty is a branch of faith.

Abu Dharr reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

I was presented with the good and evil deeds of my nation. I found that among their good deeds was clearing harmful things from the road, and I found that among their evil deeds was their spit in the mosque that they left uncleaned.

Abu Barzah reported: I said, “O Prophet of Allah, teach me something that will benefit me.” The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Remove harmful things from the roads of the Muslims.

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Clearing harmful things from the road is charity.

Abu Dharr reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

There is no soul in the son of Adam but that charity is due upon it on every day the sun rises.

It was said, “O Messenger of Allah, from what can we give in charity?” The Prophet said:

The doors of virtue are many: to glorify Allah, to praise Allah, to exalt Allah, to declare Allah is one, to enjoin good, to forbid evil, to clear harmful things from the road, to help a deaf person hear, to guide a blind person, to direct a person to meet his needs, to lend great effort to one worried and seeking aid, and to carry a heavy load in your hands on behalf of the weak. All of this is your charity, due upon your soul.

Abu Buraydah reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Inside the human being are three hundred and sixty joints, upon each of them charity is due.

They said, “Who can do that, O Prophet of Allah?” The Prophet said:

It is spittle in the mosque you clean, or something in the road you move to the side. If you cannot find anything, it is enough to perform two cycles of forenoon prayer.

Ma’qal ibn Yasar reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Whoever clears harmful things from the roads of the Muslims, a good deed will be recorded for him. Whoever is awarded a good deed, he will enter Paradise.”

Mu’adh ibn Jabal reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Whoever removes a rock from the road, a good deed will be recorded for him. Whoever has done a good deed, he will enter Paradise.

Abu Darda reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Whoever pulls something out of the roads of the Muslims that harms them, Allah will recorded a good deed for him. Whoever is given a good deed, Allah will admit him into Paradise by it.

Aisha reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Verily, every human being among the children of Adam was created with three hundred and sixty joints. Whoever exalts Allah, praises Allah, declares Allah is one, glorifies Allah, removes a rock from the roads of people, or a thorn, or a bone from the roads of people, and enjoins good and forbids evil by the number of those joints, he will walk on that day delivering himself from the Hellfire.

Abu Huraira reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

I have seen a man enjoying himself in Paradise due to a tree in the road he cut down that used to harm people.

Anas ibn Malik reported: There was a tree in the road that used to harm people, so a man came and cleared it from the road. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

I have seen him enjoying himself in its shade in Paradise.
